February 6, 2022: Nine years after the assassination of Chokri Belaïd, about a thousand supporters—mostly from the left—gathered at Human Rights Square in Tunis to commemorate the death of the political activist. Despite the ban on demonstrations—imposed along with the nighttime curfew as part of the COVID protocol enacted by President Kais Saied the previous evening— the president authorized these gatherings as well as the demonstration by his supporters in front of the High Judicial Council, which he had dissolved that night.
