February 6, 2022: Overnight, President Kais Saied announced from the Ministry of the Interior the dissolution of the High Judicial Council (CSM): “From this moment on, the CSM is a thing of the past, and a decree-law will be drafted to reorganize this body in order to put an end to this situation. I warned them several times and wanted to meet with them to issue a final warning, but what has happened in recent days has led me to make this decision.” This Sunday morning, a small group of about 100 pro-Saied supporters, under the new name “July 25 Movement,” gathered in front of the CSM headquarters in Tunis, which was completely surrounded by a large police presence. Despite the ban on demonstrations—implemented alongside the nighttime curfew as part of the COVID-19 protocol imposed by President Kais Saied the previous evening—the president authorized these gatherings as well as the demonstration by his supporters in front of the CSM.
