July 25, 2022: the anniversary of the 1956 Republic Day and the first anniversary of Kais Saied’s 2021 coup d’état, this July 25 is the day of the vote on the referendum to approve President Kais Saied’s new constitution. The people are being asked to vote “yes” or “no” to approve the text of the third constitution proposed by the President of the Republic. In downtown Tunis, polling stations are seeing only low turnout, with the abstention rate being the only figure expected given the calls for a boycott by a large number of opposition parties. The absence of observers at polling stations is also striking compared to previous elections held in Tunisia in recent years.
