March 1, 2023: In front of the Ivory Coast Embassy in Tunis, large numbers of Ivorian migrants have gathered to register and hope to be repatriated to their home country following remarks made a week ago by Tunisian President Kais Saied against the sub-Saharan community in Tunisia. The president argued that illegal immigration into Tunisia was part of a “criminal enterprise (...) aimed at changing Tunisia’s demographic composition,” in order to transform it into a “solely African” country and erode its “Arab-Muslim” character, triggering numerous arrests and attacks against Sub-Saharan Africans. Prevented from working, evicted from their homes, and hounded by the police and the general public, Sub-Saharan Africans now find themselves forced to leave the country urgently and are hoping for assistance from their home countries to do so.
