May 10, 2023: In the streets of Hara Kbira, the Jewish quarter of Houmt Souk, the capital of the island of Djerba, in the aftermath of the terrorist attack on the Ghriba synagogue by a lone terrorist, a maritime national guard officer suspended for his extremist views, which left two pilgrims and three law enforcement officers dead. Still reeling from the previous day’s events—during which many residents were present and trapped inside the synagogue for nearly four hours after the attack—all shops are closed, the neighborhood is in mourning, and security has been stepped up.
