May 10, 2023: In the streets of Hara Kbira, the Jewish quarter of Houmt Souk, the capital of the island of Djerba, in the aftermath of the terrorist attack on the Ghriba synagogue by a lone terrorist, a maritime national guard officer suspended for his extremist views, which left two pilgrims and three law enforcement officers dead. The house under construction belonging to Aviel Haddad, one of the two civilian victims of the attack. Aviel lived between Djerba and Israel; he was there this week with his cousin Ben—who was also shot dead by the terrorist—to take part in the traditional Jewish pilgrimage to La Ghriba. Still reeling from the previous day’s events—during which many residents were present and locked inside the synagogue for nearly four hours after the attack—all shops are closed, the neighborhood is in mourning, and security has been stepped up.
