The northern coastline of the peninsula has been developed into a promenade; along this waterfront, the people of Mahdia come to cool off at the end of the day, and small-scale fishermen set out to cast and retrieve their nets. The Mahdia Peninsula is the historic heart of the city, featuring the medina and, at its tip, the maritime cemetery and the borj. The residential area, called Borj Erras, is a mix of palaces and traditional fishermen’s houses.
