Five years later...
July 25, 2026: Five years after Kais Saied’s coup, the country is slowly sinking, the people and the economy are being drained, and the government remains stuck in its inability to find solutions—as exemplified by the past 10 days, during which Tunisia experienced one of its worst heat waves and an electricity crisis, with outages lasting several hours and days across the entire country. On this day—which marks both Republic Day and the anniversary of the incumbent president’s seizure of all powers—nearly 2,000 protesters took to the streets in Tunis, chanting slogans and making gestures from the 2011 revolution: “Get out!” and “Game Over.” ...
A heat wave... complications
August 20, 2026: Protesters march through downtown Tunis against President Kaïs Saïed, calling for his resignation and demanding greater political freedoms and the release of detainees and opposition figures. Portraits of the president crossed out with the slogan “GET OUT,” Tunisian flags, and signs accompany the demonstration. The protest comes amid growing social discontent following several weeks of extreme heat, water and power outages, and difficulties accessing certain medications and essential goods.
