July 25, 2021: On this Republic Day in Tunisia, several calls to protest have been circulating on social media in recent days, urging people to demonstrate across the country and demand the resignation of the government and Ennahdha. In Bardo, just a few steps from the Assembly of the Representatives of the People, police blocked access to about a hundred protesters who had gathered to chant “Get out!”—the same slogan that had toppled Ben Ali’s dictatorship ten years ago. The demonstration was dispersed by police a short time later, and several arrests were made. Since the morning, downtown Tunis had been completely blocked off by police, making it impossible for anyone to access Habib Bourguiba Avenue—an extraordinary security measure in the face of serious political, social, economic, and health tensions. In the regions—Sfax, Sousse, Kairouan, Tozeur, and elsewhere—rallies drew far larger crowds of protesters, who attacked the headquarters of the Islamist Ennahda party.
