You must be joking!!!” chanted the Islamist activists as they faced off against the pro-democracy women to defend the wearing of the niqab on the third day of the Bardo 1 sit-in. A new confrontation erupts: on one side, the sit-in protesters demonstrating against the internal political maneuvering within the Constituent Assembly; on the other, more than two thousand Ennahda activists who had come to support the new government and keep in check about a hundred aggressive Salafists. The day’s clashes were purely verbal, thanks to Ennahda’s impressive security detail, which, together with the police, managed to contain the Salafists who, once night fell, attacked the sit-in protesters protected by the police.
