December 3, 2011: With her sign, this young Islamist woman aims to demonstrate that the niqab is part of Tunisian culture, in 1905, on the third day of the Bardo 1 sit-in. A new confrontation erupted: on one side were the sit-in protesters demonstrating against the internal political maneuvering of the Constituent Assembly, and on the other were more than 2,000 Ennahda activists who had come to support the new government and keep in check about a hundred aggressive Salafists. The day’s clashes were purely verbal, thanks to Ennahda’s impressive security detail, which, together with the police, managed to contain the Salafists; however, once night fell, the Salafists attacked the protesters, who were protected by the police.
