As soon as voting ended at 6 p.m., rumors began to circulate of a landslide victory for Béji Caid Essebsi, the candidate of the Nidaa Tounes party. With an 8- to 10-point lead according to the polls, Béji Caid Essebsi won Tunisia’s first free presidential election since the 2011 revolution. Upon this announcement, large numbers of supporters gathered to celebrate the projected victory outside the party’s campaign headquarters in the very upscale Berges du Lac neighborhood of Tunis.
