This is the working-class, impoverished neighborhood of Karma in the hills above Kasserine. Here, people live surrounded by trash, building their homes haphazardly, even right down into the wadis. Families live crammed into houses that are indeed made of solid materials but are extremely precarious—no windows, no doors, no heating, and for some, no running water. The children’s only playground is the trash.
