This town has seen its young people flee clandestinely to Italy—nearly 200 in the month of September 2017 alone. Today, the village is counting the dead and survivors from the boat sunk by a Tunisian military vessel. On the night of October 8–9, 2017, a fishing boat carrying more than 90 illegal Tunisian migrants was “accidentally” struck (according to official sources), resulting in the deaths and disappearances of about 50 young Tunisians, while the others were rescued by that same Tunisian vessel.
