October 16, 2017: In the center of the village of Omm Choucha, young people have only one café open in the morning and evening where they can meet and relax. All of these young people have at least once attempted an illegal crossing to Italy and Europe in search of a better future. On the night of October 8–9, 2017, a fishing boat carrying more than 90 Tunisian illegal migrants was “accidentally” struck (according to official sources), resulting in the deaths and disappearances of about fifty young Tunisians; the others were rescued by that same Tunisian vessel.
