July 26, 2021: The official entrance gates to the Prime Minister’s Office on Kasbah Square were closed. The day after President Kais Saeid announced the dismissal of the head of government as part of his constitutional “coup,” Kasbah Square in Tunis—the center of executive power, home to the Prime Minister’s Office, the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of Defense, was sealed off and emptied of its civil servants, who were barred by the army from returning to their posts this morning. As the day drew to a close, Kais Saied, who now holds all powers, announced a complete nationwide shutdown for two days.
